In evaluating a power project, it is very important to identify the risks. Risk Management is critical. But, what is really important? What affects the revenue or expense of the project? What drives the value of a project? We can help answer that!

Our project financial analysis takes each financial parameter and models it for variance. Using our software, we change a standard proforma analysis from assumed, “deterministic” values to “stochastic” values. Each number is allowed to vary within its projected range and the analysis repeated thousands of times to bring the value of statistical analysis to bear on the project analysis.

This approach shows how good or how bad the results can be. We take into account the “big bad outcomes” as well as the best case scenarios.

Finally, we can provide a “tornado” diagram that identifies what truly drives the project value. Is that really important? Let us show you and help you improve your bottom line!

Of course! Though the Environmental Protection Agency does not get it, the American people do!

Look out the window. Is biomass green? Yes! No buts about it! Its green. It is not black like coal or oil. It is not full of heavy metals, sulfur, cadmium, arsenic or any of that other stuff. It is green and part of our normal environment.

But, but, but, … so the protest begins. But, you had to deliver that fuel to the power plant by truck or rail. And, there’s the fuel for the tractor. And … Hogwash! Duh! They just don’t get it!

Name any fuel that did not have some combustion engine involved for delivery! That natural gas was pumped to your house using compressors. You guessed it, that compressor had some form of combustion engine. Then there is the hydro plant. Even see one built? Did you see those massive machines that used combustion engines polluting the land!!! Even solar and wind use vast amounts of steel and man-made materials. Yep! You guessed it!

The fact is, anything man makes, has a carbon foot print. But, compared to coal or oil, the footprint from biomass is tiny! The harnessing of a green renewable fuel source like biomass is a big step in America’s quest for energy independence! It is a renewable fuel that we have all around us! We control it and it a lot healthier for the planet!

Make the farmer your next fuel supplier, not some foreign county that does not like us very much! Is biomass really green? You know the answer. Take a moment to explain it to the EPA! They need a little common sense!

Yes! Pretty strong words? Think I’m wrong? Read on.

Though the American power industry seems to be enamored with wind and solar power, it is not the only way to get green renewable power. Wind and solar have their place. But, biomass fuels abound and can be a great source of green renewable power.

Unlike wind or solar, biomass power plants are fully dispatchable! They can operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can be used for base load, intermediate load or peaking load. They can use local indigenous fuel sources. They can be located near the power demand. They can use Combined Heat and Power designs to increase plant energy efficiency from a typical power plant efficiency of 40 – 45 % to over 85 % of the energy of the fuel! How much greener can you get????

How do I know? Because Rudd Asset Management power plant designs do it!

Our plants produce green renewable electric power using Distributed Generation and Combined Heat and Power designs and we can operate on local fuel sources. Talk about making America energy independent from foreign supply! Even T. Boone Pickens would be proud!

Want to know more? Give us a call! We hope to be producing green renewable power in your area in the near future! Contact Rudd Asset Management. We are EMPOWERING AMERICANS TO POWER AMERICA!

Many renewable power generators find that they must work with a utility to determine connect to the electrical system. There is no universal cost. The cost to connect to the power grid is location dependent. Why is that?

The short answer is because the effects of the new power injection are location dependent. If it is injected into the electrical system that is a large load point with little system congestion or load factor, it is not such a big deal. But, if you try to inject a large generation amount, such as 100 MWe, it can lead to difficulties to the electrical grid system.

Electricity cannot be stored. Supply and demand must be kept in reasonable balance. Too much power added is not always usually a good thing. It needs to be sized to meet the system physical condition and electric load.
If you add to much power on a circuit that has minimal use or small current capacity, you will have to pay to upgrade the circuit. You, the new power generator are causing the problem. You need to contribute, or perhaps pay for all of the upgrade expenses. These upgrade costs can be very significant.

How can you avoid this large cost? Simply size your generation to meet the load demand and likely load growth. A properly sized power addition can sometimes be accommodated with little system upgrade.

The renewable power generator must be aware of the electrical system, its condition, its load, and it limitations. If you insist on adding load to a problem area, be prepared to pay a steep price.

Questions? Rudd Energy Management can help. We can help you negotiate an interconnection cost. We can’t always eliminate an interconnection cost, but we will try to make it a fair cost for you.

Many renewable power generators find that they must work with a utility to determine the value of their power to them. There is no universal value. The value of power is location dependent. But, what is an “avoided cost”?

_
Simply put, it the price that the utility would have paid if it had to produce the power itself or bought it. It is the cost it would pay if they did not buy the power from the renewable power provider. It serves as the “floor” price.

_
If the renewable power generator is willing to sell power to a utility at the avoided cost or lower, it saves the utility from having to build a new generation source. The local rate payers benefit from this. They need not pay for the new plant costs.

_
In the State of Indiana, the avoided cost is filed by the regulated utility on its Internet web sites. It is recalculated every year and posted on the web site once it has been approved. In Indiana, the new rate normally goes into effect about April 1st. It is approved for one year. Next year the new avoided cost is calculated and the cycle starts all over again.

_
Currently, the avoided cost is quite low because there is an abundance of electric power due to the recession causing commercial and industrial electricity usage to drop significantly. But, once the recession is over, it is expected to quickly go up to previous avoided cost rates.

_
Questions? Rudd Energy Management can help. We can help you calculate an avoided cost. We can explain it and its proper usage to you and help you develop a strategy to accommodate the temporary low rate.

In power plants, often the last priority of design is how to maintain it. Power plants are like anything else. They need repair. They need to be maintained.

With over 30 years of power plant experience, our company designs maintenance needs into power plants designs or retrofits. We make sure that when a project is specified, it is specified to last. When the cost is analyzed, we focus on the “total cost”, not just the capital costs.

Similarly for a heat rate, critical components must be considered for their effect on the plant heat rate and cost of operation. Anything that requires an outage or increases the risk for a forced outage needs to be identified in the “total cost” perspective. The “cheapest” pump, valve, heat exchanger, is not really “cheaper” if it costs you more! Experience matters and can save you big money!

Contact us to see how to build heat rate and total cost savings into your plant.

Many States are taking the action to make green renewable energy happen! A large number of them have worked with local utilities to offer green renewable electric tariffs. This allows consumers to sign up for an energy supply that is generated from a green renewable power source.

This source can be from a number of green sources. Often it is energy produced from wind generation or solar energy. But, it can be from a number of other sources such as biomass fuels, geothermal energy, landfill methane gas generation, waste fuels using anaerobic generation,

Consumers have a lot of ways to participate in green renewable energy development. In the short term, it may mean a small increase in cost. But, in the long term, America gets what it needs. It gets energy independence. America can free itself from foreign energy sources once and for all and ensure its long term viability!

“If you think the cost of energy is too high, try (having) an energy shortage,”

Attached is link to a news article written on the subject. You may find it interesting!

What are you doing to make green renewable power a reality? What can you do to help America achieve energy independence? Maybe a green power tariff is a place to start!

I recently spent time in Washington as part of a Business Advocacy effort. Energy professionals from 20 States went to Washington to talk to legislators to explain to them why their leadership is needed. Here is a link to one of the press reports of our efforts.

http://www.insideindianabusiness.com/newsitem.asp?id=39961#middle

Please paste it in your browser to read a summary article.

I took time to go to Washington to speak to Indiana’s two Senators and four of its Congressmen. I went to make a clear request, “please make 2010 the year that America will get a meaningful energy plan and pass a mandatory Renewable Energy Standard”!

Today, America is in a state of confusion! Despite massive amounts of funds being proposed for spending on the development of green renewable energy, very little money has actually been awarded. Many projects are being delayed until lenders and project developers get clear direction as to where the country is going!

Today, twenty eight States have passed some form of Renewable Energy Standard, or Voluntary Energy Standard, or Renewable Energy Standard. But, none are exactly the same. Some propose a target that 15 % of all electric energy comes from green energy sources by 2015, some 20% by 2020, some more, some less. The definition of what a “renewable energy standard” is varies from State to State!

Lenders are confused. Project developers are confused. Nothing is being done! Now is the time for leadership. Hopefully our Federal government will be part of that leadership. If not, we hope they will at least get out of the way and let private enterprise take the lead!

How can your help? Call your Senator or Congressman. Ask them what they are doing to make sure a bill passes in 2010! We cannot let partisan politics stop America’s march to green renewable power development! Get involved or get out of the way!

In the news you hear a lot about “green” and renewable power. We think of wind, solar or biomass projects. But, would it surprise you to know that a number of States and the Federal Government also view energy efficiency as “green”. Well, they do.

When you stop to think about it, it makes good sense. What better way to benefit the Earth than to use much more of the energy that we consume every day! The average power plant often operates with an energy efficiency of 30 – 40 %. Over half the energy of the fuel is wasted! How much ‘greener” can you get than to use more of the energy that we consume!

Rudd Energy Management (REM) is very active in cogeneration and tri-generation designs. We can show you how to put the power of Combined Heat and Power to work for you and your projects!

A well designed CHP project can often save capital costs and O&M costs! We can show you how to increase your project profits and be “green”! Contact REM to find out how!
